AAA: Gasoline Demand Increases Pushing Pump Prices Upward

Charlotte, N.C. (June 15, 2020) – Motorists are filling up at the pump more and more as the slow but steady rise in demand has pushed gasoline prices in the Carolinas more expensive.

“Carolinians are back on the roads and refueling gasoline demand,” said Tiffany Wright, AAA spokesperson. “An increase in demand will definitely contribute to higher prices in the next few weeks but the numbers won’t hit typical summer prices.”

North Carolina’s $1.98 average is 13 cents more expensive on the week, 27 cents more expensive than a month ago but 48 cents cheaper than a year ago. South Carolina’s $1.85 average is 12 cents more expensive on the week, 26 cents more expensive than a month ago but 44 cents cheaper than a year ago. Both North and South Carolina landed on the nation’s top 10 list for largest weekly increases in the country.

Today’s national average sits at $2.10 – seven cents more on the week, 24 cents more on the month but 59 cents cheaper on the year. Only one-third of state averages are $1.99 per gallon or less and the majority of those states are in the South and Southeast.

Last week, domestic crude prices decreased amid increased market concern that a spike in new COVID-19 infections could lead to another reduction in crude demand. Additionally, total domestic crude inventories grew by 5.7 million bbl last week, bringing the total to 538.1 million bbl – and the increase in crude supplies also helped to push prices lower. If these trends continue this week, crude prices could decline further.
