Charlotte, N.C. (June 21, 2022) – Gas prices in the Carolinas are moving lower after oil and gasoline demand suffered big weekly drops. The national gas price average for regular unleaded is once again back below $5 per gallon – and for now, it looks like both states’ averages won’t make it that high.
“Motorists in the Carolinas are finally getting some modest relief at the pump after several weeks of rising gas prices,” said Tiffany Wright, spokesperson, AAA – The Auto Club Group in the Carolinas. “The price of crude suffered a significant loss last week after the rate hike, and if this downward trend holds, gas price drops could accelerate.”
North Carolina’s current gas price average now sits at $4.60, decreasing by six cents on the week. This average is 23 cents more than a month ago and $1.72 more than a year ago. South Carolina’s current gas price average now sits at $4.52, decreasing by eight cents on the week. This average is 22 cents more than a month ago and $1.76 more than a year ago.
The national average for a gallon of gas is $4.96, a nickel less than a week ago.
The U.S. price of oil dropped 9% last week. Friday’s settlement of $110 per barrel is $11 per barrel less than the week before. Gasoline futures lost 38 cents on the week, for a combined 2-week loss of 46 cents.
