JUNE 9, 2016 (CHARLOTTE, NC) – On Wednesday, Governor Nikki Haley approved billions of dollars for roads and bridge projects across South Carolina by signing S.1258 into law. The bill allows for more than $2 billion to be borrowed for major interstate and bridge projects.
“We commend Governor Haley for signing S.1258 into law, as this bill is a good start to addressing the safety of South Carolina roads. We look forward to a permanent fix with recurring dollars,” said AAA Carolinas President and CEO Dave Parsons.
Governor Haley had noted that she would not sign a roads bill if it increased taxes, so under S.1258 money will be leveraged into bonds. In a rare statement signing Haley addressed the bill stating, “I have done so for one reason and on reason only?t is a better option than what we will have without this bill: a full reversion to the even more unaccountable and defective system that was replaced in 2007.”
