CHARLOTTE, NC (February 14, 2019) – With the NBA All-Star Weekend fast approaching, AAA Carolinas is warning motorists of the heavy traffic and delays expected in the city of Charlotte.
“For just the second time ever, Charlotte will be hosting the NBA All-Star Game and the city is buzzing with excitement,” said AAA Carolinas Traffic Safety Foundation president Tiffany Wright. “With such a large influx of people descending upon the city this weekend, it’s important for drivers to plan ahead, expect delays and exercise patience behind the wheel.” The 68th annual NBA All-Star Game will take place at the Spectrum Center on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019. More than 150,000 fans are expected in Charlotte throughout a weekend full of games and events. On Friday Feb 15, festivities will begin with media events, a Hall of Fame announcement and the celebrity game that will be played at Bojangles’ Coliseum. Saturday events will feature the slam dunk contest, three point contest and more at the Spectrum Center. Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game begins at 8 p.m. at the Spectrum Center. AAA recommends that motorists avoid Independence Boulevard and the Bojangles’ Coliseum Friday afternoon. If drivers don’t need to travel to Uptown, they should avoid the area this weekend. “Thousands of pedestrians will flood the streets of Uptown Charlotte and surrounding areas over the next several days to attend games and social events,” added Wright. “Motorists need to slow down, stay alert and not drive distracted. Pedestrians must do their part as well to help ensure their safety by using sidewalks, crosswalks and paying attention as they walk throughout busy streets.” AAA Carolinas also reminds local motorists that many people will be visiting from other places and will not be familiar with the roads, so give them extra time and space to maneuver.
