AAA Carolinas: Fuel Freefall Continues Across the Carolinas

Charlotte, N.C. (March 30, 2020) – Gas prices throughout the Carolinas are only getting cheaper, as residents are urged to stay home to avoid the spread of COVID-19. At $1.84 North Carolina’s average is 10 cents cheaper on the week, 33 cents cheaper on the month and 68 cents cheaper on the year. South Carolina’s $1.76 average is 10 cents cheaper on the week, 42 cents cheaper on the month and 69 cents cheaper on the year.

“Because of social distancing and the stay-at-home order, we are continuing to see even less traffic on the roadways,” said Tiffany Wright, AAA spokesperson. “These factors will ultimately drive down demand, increase gasoline supply and continue to lower pump prices for the foreseeable future.”

At $2.01, today’s national gas price average is 68 cents less than a year ago, a low not seen since March 2016. Crude oil continues to be the biggest driver of the less expensive gas prices and at the end of Friday’s formal trading session, crude oil dropped to $21.51 per barrel.

Pump prices continue to decline around the country as the public health, financial and economic impacts from COVID-19 continue to mount. Until the virus is contained and Russia and Saudi Arabia end their crude price war, crude prices are likely to remain low.
