AAA Carolinas: Tips for Returning Home After Dorian
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (September 6, 2019) – With many parts of the Carolinas and surrounding states still under mandatory evacuation from Hurricane Dorian, AAA Carolinas wants to prepare evacuees for the return home in the coming days.
Follow the advice of local authorities. DO NOT return home unless it is safe to do so.
AAA Carolinas does not recommend driving in hurricane conditions. Don’t drive around or through barriers. To verify road conditions after a storm call:
• North Carolina: 511
• South Carolina: 888-877-9151
Roads prone to flooding will likely have standing water following Dorian’s heavy rainfall. For driving tips in rainy and flooded conditions, see our previous release.
What to take with you when driving back:
- Government-issued photo ID and proof of address
- Important phone numbers
- Bottled water and non-perishable foods
- First aid kit
- Hygiene products and toilet paper, insect repellent and sunscreen
- Long sleeved shirts, long pants, sturdy waterproof boots and work gloves
- Flashlight, portable radio and extra batteries
- Cameras for photos of damage for insurance claims
- Carry cash. ATMs may be down and stores may not be able to accept electronic payments
Other driving tips:
- Plan for delays when traveling. Bring extra food, water, pillows, blankets and other items that will make the trip more comfortable. Keep the fuel tank of your vehicle as full as possible in case gas stations along the route are crowded, out of fuel or closed.
- Pack your patience. Others on the road are experiencing similar frustrations. Focus on the positive and getting home safely.
Tips once you arrive home:
- Use generators or gasoline powered machines outside only and away from windows.
- Do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters.
- Stay off bridges over fast moving water.
- Be careful during clean-up. Wear protective clothing and work with someone else.
- Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or you are in standing water.
- Avoid wading in water, which may contain dangerous debris or electrical wires.
- Save phone calls for emergencies. Use text messages or social media to communicate with family and friends.
- Document property damage with photos and contact your insurance company for assistance.
AAA is closely monitoring Dorian’s path and will send helpful updates accordingly. Please be on the lookout for a release with tips on filing an insurance claim in the coming days.
