AAA: Pump Prices in Carolinas See Lowest Start to Hurricane Season in 17 Years

Charlotte, N.C. (June 1, 2020) – Despite a slow uptick in pump prices within the Carolinas, majority seeing increases of a penny on the week, hurricane season begins with the lowest pump prices since 2003.

“Although the demand for gasoline is increasing, prices at the pump are still lower-than-average,” said Tiffany Wright, AAA spokesperson. “Motorists are slowly returning to the roads but gasoline demand hasn’t returned to a level that would cause pump prices to drastically increase just yet.”

On the week, North Carolina’s $1.82 average did not see an increase but is 18 cents more than a month ago and 76 cents less than a year ago. South Carolina’s $1.67 average is one cent more than a week ago, 12 cents more than a month ago and 78 cents less than a year ago.

The national gas price average is $1.97, a one cent increase over the week. Part of the incremental jump can be attributed to the increase in gasoline demand, which saw a 7% week-over-week increase. However, demand is still down nearly 25% compared to last year.
